Research Fellow 2012-3

Ofri Ilany was a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Center from 2012 to 2013. His research dealt with the role of Old Testament models and symbols in the formative period of German nationalism – extending from the French Revolution to the March revolution of 1848. German thinkers, poets and theologians of the early nineteenth century hailed the Hebrew political system described in the Bible as an ideal national theology, based on belief in special, particular Providence. His study examined sermons, speeches, ceremonies and other occasions in which the national identity was forged through the use of the biblical text. It also discussed the complex relations between admiration towards the ancient Hebrews and intensifying hostility toward contemporaneous Jews.

The study conducted at the Center was completed and published in Hebrew in 2016
