Pedagogy Workshop

Two national communities rose during the British Mandate in Palestine - a Jewish and an Arab one - and in both played the education system a significant role in shaping the national identity. The Jewish and Arab education systems were almost completely detached from one another, physically as well as conceptually. That separation, its characteristics and its implications will provide the framework and research question for this workshop. The Workshop will focus on the ways in which the relationship between the two national communities was reflected in their pedagogical thinking.

The workshop will take place primarily in Hebrew, with some exceptions. A keynote talk will be given in English by Prof. Johnathan Gribetz (Princeton University) under the title "Defining Neighbors in Palestine-Israel: Before and After the Mandate". In the Zionist-Arab encounter, how has each side sought to learn about the other? What sources have they used and how have these exercises in learning, understanding, and interpreting informed the political developments of the encounter and conflict? Drawing on his studies of mutual perceptions in the late Ottoman period and on his current work on the Palestine Liberation Organization, Johnathan Gribetz will offer broader reflections on these questions and suggestions for future research directions in the study of learning (and especially of learning about an/the other) in British Mandate Palestine.

ימי המנדט הבריטי בארץ היו ימי התגבשותן של שתי קהילות לאומיות בפלשתינה (א"י): היהודית והערבית. שתי מערכות החינוך, העברית והערבית, היוו את סוכן החיברות המרכזי לעיצוב זהותן הלאומית והתרבותית של שתי הקהילות. מערכות החינוך הללו היו נפרדות כמעט לחלוטין, לא רק מהבחינה הפיזית, אלא גם התפישתית. מסגרת הדיון ושאלת המחקר שבלב סדנה זו הן ההפרדה, מאפייניה והשלכותיה. סדנת המחקר תתמקד באופן בו מערכת היחסים בין שתי הקהילות הלאומיות השתקפה בחשיבה הפדגוגית הערבית והעברית. התוכנית המלאה מצורפת למטה.
