Ray Schrire is an MA student in the Department of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and affiliated with the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center. In 2013, he graduated from the Department of Philosophy in the Honors Program for Outstanding Students of History, where he researched the art and visual culture of the Weimar Republic through the study of Weimar émigré self-portraits. Ray teaches a course about methodological developments in the discipline of history in the 19th and 20th centuries and is part of the editorial board of the History Department’s Journal, Hayo-Haya. His current research interests are cultural history, history of science, and organization of knowledge in Germany during the 18th and 19th century. Because of his special interest in knowledge organization within German Environmentalism, Ray decided to participate in the project of cataloging the papers of Heinrich Mendelssohn at the Archives for the History of Tel Aviv University. He takes particular interest in the ways German Environmentalism was introduced to the Israeli sphere through the work of Mendelssohn. Within the framework of the Traces of German-Jewish History project, Ray and his colleagues Netta Cohen and Itamar Manoff are currently researching the ways in which the idea and practice of environment protection interacted with nationalism in Israel.
