Doctoral Fellow 2023-2024

Sarah Sosinski is a doctoral fellow at the Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center for German-Jewish Literature and Cultural History at the Hebrew University. Her research centers on German Jewish Literature spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, with a specific focus on authors of the Fin de Siècle, literary avant-garde, and Bohemian literature. Prior to her Fellowship at the Franz Rosenzweig Center, she served as a research assistant at the University of Augsburg, where she coordinated the "Jewish Studies" program within the Faculty of Philology and History and worked as a guide at the Jewish Museum Augsburg.

Sarah's dissertation project delves into Jewish family and generational novels within German-language Jewish literature, covering the period from the legal equality of Jews in Germany in 1871 to the conclusion of the First World War. Utilizing the narrative tools of literary realism, these novels depict the everyday life of Jewish individuals across various social strata. Within the natural progression of generations, they portray narratives of progress that either uphold the central concept of Jewish emancipation characterizing the 19th century or, conversely, reveal its shortcomings and suggest new directions for Jewish life in the 20th century.

This project fills a 'blind spot' in the genre definition of the family and generation novel within the realm of Jewish literature. It scrutinizes the notions of family as the 'nucleus' of a communal concept, exploring their intricate interconnections, which will be examined in greater depth in individual cases.
