“Nowadays we need the traditional text”: The Hebrew University Bible, 1943—1953

Tom Eshed

The Hebrew University Press Association was established in 1929 with the purpose of publishing research of the university professors, textbooks for students, scientific journals, and various important scientific publications in the Hebrew language. On July12, 1943, for the first time in the University Press history, a special press conference was held announcing the launching of a first-ever, ambitious project: the publication of the Bible: The Bible. At the press conference, Yehuda Leib Magnes, the head of the University Press and the president of the university, announced:

More than any other time in history, the moral and religious foundations of the world have collapsed. The western morals and culture, based on the Hebrew Bible, are being attacked to be destroyed. A great many of our brothers and sisters in the occupied lands of Europe are being led as sheep to slaughter. Countless ancient communities, synagogues, and holy burial sites are being desecrated. Is it not the right time for those who were saved in Zion and who took upon themselves the role of the continuation of the Jewish Torah and Jewish life in order to lay the spiritual foundations for our preservation and hope?

University meeting regarding the publishing of the Bible, 1943

The debate regarding the publishing of the Bible in the University Press staff meetings also revolved around a feeling of vision and responsibility, considering the news of the destruction of the European Jewry. In the first meeting held to discuss the publication, Magnes said: “this meeting is the most important meetings of the press from the day of its establishment, and it might be an historical turning point in the future of this institution.” Professor Jacob Nahum Epstein, the founder of the Jewish Studies Institute, said that the enterprise has to be considered as a “Kiddush Hashem” [the sanctification of God`s name. Historian Joseph Klausner said that the time is not ripe for an annotated version of The Bible: “one day we might need a scientific publication […] but nowadays we need the traditional text”.

Klausner's comment is especially important, considering the fact that until then the university publishing house had not taken part in any non-scientific publication. The Hebrew University published scientific books and journals such as the Jewish Studies quarterly “Tarbitz”, the bibliographical quarterly “Kiryat Sepher” of the National Library, a translation to Hebrew of philosophical masterworks, a few volumes of the “New Hebrew Literature” by Klausner, books describing the archeological  work of Eleazar Sukenik (“The Third Wall”, “Beith Alpha”), an analytical Flora of Palestine, and even the writings of the ninth-century Persian Muslim historian Ahmad Ibn al-Baladhuri.

Other publication houses in Palestine noticed this fact, and protested against Magnes’ declaration that the Hebrew University is about to publish the first Hebrew edition of The Bible in Palestine. “Hozaah Ivrith” [Hebrew Publications] publishing house wrote a reproaching letter to the university administration, asking to issue an official statement that this is not true, and that “Hozaah Ivrith” is already publishing the Pentateuch.

An even fiercer dispute erupted between the University Press and the Schocken Press. Gustav Schocken wrote a letter to the university’s administration, proposing Magnes to publish an annotated scientific edition and allowing Schocken Press to publish the popular edition. Magnes opposed this proposal, and asked that the University Press would publish alone a traditional version of the text, while Schocken would publish a scientific version and an annotated edition. The conflict worsened to an extent that Magnes wrote to the university administrator, David Werner Senator: “I am told by a trust-worthy source that the Executive Committee chairman Mr. Schocken is holding a propaganda campaign against The Bible enterprise”.

While the University Press members discussed the publication of The Bible as a somewhat religious and messianic affair, the motivation to publish the book came from more prosaic reasons, reflecting Magnes’ desire to publish a traditional text and not an annotated edition. Since the establishment of the University Press in 1929 it suffered from tremendous financial and technical difficulties. In fact, the University Press received almost no financial support from the university and did not pay the authors of most of the books it published. In most cases, when a researcher asked to publish a book through the University Press, he had to pay for the expenses himself. By publishing the Bible, the University Press wished to follow the footsteps of other academic publishing houses, mainly the British Oxford Publishing House, which financed most of its scientific publication by publishing The Bible and other religious texts.

Although the announcement regarding the publication of The Bible received some skeptical reactions from competing publishing houses, other reactions were enthusiastic. The university’s administration agreed to participate in the financing of the enterprise, the University Press received letters encouraging the enterprise, and the Bloch Company, the distributer of the University Press publications in the United States, announced immediately that soon it will sell “The First Hebrew Bible in Palestine”.

Despite the dramatic announcement, the Bible publication enterprise had numerous problems. The death of Professor Umberto Cassuto who supervised the project, the rivalry with Schocken and other publishing houses, and financial difficulties – all delayed the project. Finally, the University Press Bible was published only in 1953, a decade after the initial announcement. The actual publication was not accompanied by festivities. The University Press failed in arranging special types for the book as it planned originally, and was criticized for the fact that even though the publication was called “The Bible Jerusalem Publication of the Hebrew University” – it was actually printed in Tel Aviv.

Letter from Schocken 1944

Letter from Magnes, 1944
