Ein Drama in Akten: Die Restitution der Sammlungen des Wilnaer YIVO
Shilo B. Ein Drama in Akten: Die Restitution der Sammlungen des Wilnaer YIVO. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht; 2022. Available from: Publisher's VersionAbstract
The YIVO (Yidisher visnshaftlekher institut), founded in 1925 and run from New York from 1940, preserves the largest collection on the history and culture of Eastern European Jewry. After the destruction and robbery of the institute in Vilna by the Nazis, only fragments remained, which were recovered at various locations after 1945. In her essay, Bilha Shilo describes the restitution history marked by the early beginnings of the Cold War: the successful rescue of holdings from the American occupation zone in Germany is juxtaposed with the failed repatriation of collection items from Czechoslovakia. The competing claims of the YIVO and other institutions for the material Jewish heritage of Europe are also revealed.

Contested Heritage: Jewish Cultural Property after 1945
Gallas E, Holzer-Kawalko A, Jessen C, Weiss Y eds. Contested Heritage: Jewish Cultural Property after 1945.; 2019. Available from: Publisher's VersionAbstract

Contested Heritage: Jewish Cultural Property after 1945" addresses the political and cultural implications of robbery and displacement of the Jewish cultural property during the Second World War. The volume includes seventeen essays, accompanied by newly discovered archival material and illustrations, which address a wide range of topics: from the shifting meaning and character of the objects themselves, the so-called object biographies, their restitution processes after 1945, conflicting ideas about their appropriate location, political interests in their preservation, actors and networks involved in salvage operations, to questions of intellectual and cultural transfer processes revolving around the moving objects and their literary resonances. Thus, it offers a fascinating insight into lesser-known dimensions of the aftermath of the Holocaust and the history of Jews in postwar Europe.

The volume originates from the Minerva Gentner Symposium Contested German-Jewish Cultural Property after 1945. The Sacred and the Profane that was held in Jerusalem, on September 27-29, 2016, in the framework of research cooperation between the Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center (the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach and the Simon Dubnow Institute for Jewish History and Culture in Leipzig.

Habima. Eine hebräische Bühne in der Weimarer Republik
Zer-Zion S. . Paderborn: Wilhelm Fink Verlag; 2016. Available from:

Textual Understanding and Historical Experience. On Peter Szondi
Zepp S. Textual Understanding and Historical Experience. On Peter Szondi. Paderborn: Wilhelm Fink Verlag; 2015. Available from: Publisher's Version

This volume addresses the nexus between historical experience and philological understanding in the writings of the literary scholar Peter Szondi (1929–1971).
Surveying the breadth and depth of Szondi’s theoretical interests, the volume weaves a comprehensive portrait of this unique thinker. His contribution to the field of Comparative Literature was significant, and in some cases groundbreaking. Bringing together articles by historians, literary scholars and cultural historians, this volume portrays Peter Szondi’s thinking about literature, thereby conveying a sense of the scope and significance of his intellectual interests and achievements, while not neglecting the aspect of biographical and chronological coherence. Peter Szondi’s life and work is presented as intricately intertwined with the philosophical, political, and historical context of the 20th century.

The work of the unconventional German Jewish philosopher and social critic Constantin Brunner (1862–1937) has been recently rediscovered by cultural historians. The essays collected in this volume discuss Brunner’s original theses and their impact on diverse contemporary philosophical and cultural historical settings during the periods of the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and Brunner’s exile during Nazism.
